落雷いなびかり
上昇気流によって生じる積乱雲のなかでは、摩擦によってあられや氷などがプラスに帯電した層とマイナスに帯電した層に分かれ、大きな電位が生じています。雲の下方と大地との電位差がある限界を超えると空気中に電気が流れ、落雷となるのです。放電実験装置で飛行機への落雷と、ビルへの落雷を様子を再現してしています。
When an updraft carries rain and hail upward into a cloud, those droplets bump into each other and build up static electricity. Once that charge reaches a certain level, it leaps between the cloud and the ground below, becoming a bolt of lightning. This exhibit shows you what happens when this electrical discharge strikes a flying airplane or a building on the ground.
